This project was one of the very few commercial projects I worked on back in Oxfordshire in the UK. The project was an entrance hall of a girls boarding house at a private school. As you can see from the ‘before’ photos below, the hallway looked dated and was in no way inviting you into the house. This boarding house was pretty much home for a lot of the girls so I found it especially important to create a more welcoming entrance for them and their visitors.
I sat down and had a meeting with the housemistress of the boarding house to discuss the requirements of the entrance hall. I discovered that there were often high volumes of traffic passing through this compact space and that it was also a main fire exit. In terms of decor the yellow wall/door color continued through the rest of the house, so needed to be incorporated into the design and the carpet had to stay as it was. After gathering all the necessary info I needed, I planned the new scheme.
I wanted the entrance to look fun, bright and inviting, so introduced some bright pastel colors to compliment the existing yellow color. I then accessorized with faux plants, new wall shelves and updated notice pin and whiteboards. As space was limited, I added a wall shelf to give the room a focal point and also an added surface for storage and writing. As a visitor opens the door to enter the hallway they are now greeted with a big ‘hello’ wall sticker and the name of the boarding house is displayed over head in fun frames.
This entrance is now welcoming and vibrant- making a more appealing environment for the girls to come back to after class. I really enjoyed working on this project and received wonderful feedback not just from the housemistress, but from the girls themselves. A truly heartwarming project!
